Being in the midst of award season and with Oscar buzz over all the best movies of the year, we’re definitely getting into movie mode here at The WAVE and started thinking…if you had to choose, what are the five movies you’d never get tired of watching over and over again?
The WAVE air talent was up to the challenge and picked out their top five, and we want to know yours!
Pat Prescott:
- Double Indemnity
- House of Games
- Vertigo
- North By Northwest
- High Society
Kim Amidon:
- It Happened One Night
- Funny Girl
- Little Miss Sunshine
- Christmas Vacation
- Sound of Music
Sam Stander:
- 300
- Devil Wears Prada
- Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
- The Lion in Winter
- Field of Dreams
Talaya Trigueros:
- Splendor In The Grass: (Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty’s debut on the big screen was amazing! Their chemistry and the story of young true love makes me sigh. Plus the story of losing all one’s money at the beginning of the great depression was eye-opening.)
- Spaceballs: Mel Brooks at his best and I love to laugh really hard and that crazy film does it every time! And it was a film I watched with my kids when they were little.
- Dr. Zhivago: The outrageously handsome Omar Sharif and the stunning Julie Christie star in this epic of a film that is also a great history lesson of the Russian Revolution. Plus the scene of the Ice Palace is breathtaking. Again…a heart wrenching story of forbidden love.
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: Just pure goofiness with Matthew Broderick’s dry wit and I loved the way he spoke directly into the camera and it made one feel like we were part of the entire day, ditching school and hanging out in Chicago. A fabulous laugh-out-loud film and glad to see the character revived in the new Honda commercials!
- The Professional: Natalie Portman was just a young girl and you immediately knew she was going to be one of our greatest actresses. Jean Reno as Leon the professional assassin suddenly develops a love he has never known before. I love this film!
Deborah Howell:
- Out of Africa
- Green Card
- One Fine Day
- Four Weddings and a Funeral
- Driving Miss Daisy
Keri Tombazian:
- Cinema Paradiso: This beautiful film embodies the essence of my husband’s love of film; and in turn, it makes my heart swell with love for him over and over. Good art reminds us of the beauty in our own midst.
- Magnolia: Like watching glass shatter and then finding in the rubble some beautiful pieces whose edges are somehow smooth and round and of worth; oh life.
- Love Actually: This was the film maker’s comment after the hatred of 911. Everyday heroes finding their strength in love. And ooh la la – Hugh Grant!
- City Lights: Nearly as perfect as a film can be; without a word – they deliver their lines with perfect communication; beautiful.
- The Godfather Part II: archetypal themes of life, death, loyalty; sweeping scope; some of the best performances of our lifetime.
Bill Dudley:
- Casablanca
- Sunset Blvd
- Some Like It Hot
- Network
- Planes Trains & Automobiles
- HONORARY MENTION: A current film I’ve seen three times The Help
Mike Sakellarides:
- Shawshank Redemption (1994): courage, the power of friendship, determination, and good ol’ biblical retribution!
- Dances with Wolves (1990): true to history, an epic western, epic movie-making, and an epic love story.
- Blazing Saddles (1974): hysterical Gene Wilder, Mel Brooks, the late Cleavon Little and Madeline Kahn.
- Never on Sunday (1960) BW: pure comedy and musical joy with the original ‘happy hooker’ Melina Mercouri.
- It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) BW: Frank Capra’s optimism and Jimmy Stewart will insure our survival on the island!
Brie Tennis:
- The Holiday
- Steel Magnolias
- 9 to 5
- Airplane!
- The Breakfast Club
Marina Wilson:
- Contact
- Avatar
- Godfather 1
- It’s A Wonderful Life
- Forest Gump

How is it even possible to list only five movies? Entertainment is such an important part of my life, and I am eternally grateful for those that have chosen a career path that keeps me in stitches, warms my soul, makes me cry (yes I do occasionally), or thrills me.
In no particular order here they are:
1. The Last Holiday – (2006) Great cast, including two of my favorites, Queen Latifah and Gérard Depardieu. After she’s diagnosed with a terminal illness, a shy woman decides to take a European vacation. She not only checks off a hand full of items from her bucket list, but befriends her Idol, Chef Didier. Cooking is a BIG part of my life, as is travel, so this one hits home in two ways.
2. Monster in Law – (2005) OMG! Could Jane Fonda have been any funnier in this? I don’t think so! Don’t even get me started on Wanda Sykes. She is such a talented Comedienne. We really need to see her in more movies.
3. Sleepless in Seattle – (1993) Another classic that we watch every year during the holidays. Another two of my favorite actors together.
4. Kelly’s Heroes – (1970) A group of U.S. soldiers sneaks across enemy lines to get their hands on a secret stash of Nazi treasure. It combines Action, Adventure, and Comedy all in one. The Cast is a bunch of Old School actors, most of which are still acting today.
5. Home for the Holidays – (1995) Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Anne Bancroft, Charles Durning, and so many more. Directed by Jodie Foster, and another Classic that plays in our house every Thanksgiving. It is the epitome of what Thanksgiving with the family is to so many of us. Fun, crazy, sad, furious, loving.
So that’s it, but I would like to mention a few actors names that I will watch no matter what the critics will say, and they are:
Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Meg Ryan, Matthew Broderick, John Cusack, Queen Latifah, Walter Matthau, anything by Mel Brooks, Adam Sandler as goofy as he is, and too many more to list.
