The top 13 contestants on American Idol performed the first themed live show with the boys taking on classics from [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm] and the girls paying tribute to the late [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Whitney Houston[/lastfm]. While there were a few stand out performances on the show, it was one contestant’s daring and powerful performance that has everyone talking.

The 16-year-old San Diego native, Jessica Sanchez, blew away the judges and her competition with a stunning rendition of Houston’s signature hit “I Will Always Love You.”

Sanchez took on the ambitious song that is one of the most difficult for performers to get right, but her confident rendition shocked the judges and made her the standout of the night. Judge Steven Tyler even said, “Jessica, you may be the one. You just made 40 million people cry.”

Watch her performance below and tell us how it compares to Houston’s original!

The sad part about this is that I don’t believe we will ever hear in our lifetime a version better than Whitney’s. I wish people would stop trying to sing her songs and only play the originals, but that will never happen.

You must accept life and learn to move on. That song was a tribute to a great singer and remembering her great contribution to the music industry. One of the most flattering gesture for a singer is to imitate her song. Paying tribute in singing her song makes Whitney proud and happy.

    Simply amazing!!

I don’t think she hit the mark, no one can sing like Whitney. Good try. I liked the country girl more, she made the song her song.
    From a Whitney fan.

    1. Dave says:

Gail seems not to understand that the song that was sang was a very difficult song to sing. If the country girl can sing the song sang by Ms. Sanchez, then we can compare apple to apple, not apple to an orange. But then again, you are entitled to your own opinion.

Ok, but my vote goes to Houston than Hudson only
