The original 1989 Herbert Ross film Steel Magnolias is getting a modern facelift with a brand new tough-as-steel cast in an adaptation for an original Lifetime movie.

Academy Award nominee [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Queen Latifah[/lastfm] joined the all-star cast that also includes staples like Alfre Woodard and Phylicia Rashad taking on the iconic roles in a contemporary take on the film.

Latifah is starring in this anticipated adaptation as M’Lynn, originally played by Sally Field in the 1989 film. The film also features a stellar line-up that includes Alfre Woodard as Ouiser, Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad as Clairee, Grammy winner Jill Scott as Truvy, Adepero Oduye as Annelle and Condola Rashad as Shelby.

Lifetime Networks president and GM Nancy Dubuc told The Hollywood Reporter, “Queen Latifah, Phylicia, Alfre, Jill, Adepero and Condola are some of the most celebrated women in music, film, television and stage, and we could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”

The Lifetime film will follow the same lines as the original, focusing on the close-knit relationships of six Louisiana-based woman who meet regularly at Truvy’s beauty shop. Production begins this April with the film debuting later this year.

The original film starred an A-list cast of Sally Field (M’Lynn), Shirley MacLaine (Louisa “Ouiser” Boudreaux), Olympia Dukakis (Clairee Belcher), Dolly Parton (Truvy Jones), Daryl Hannah (Annelle Dupuy Desoto), and Julia Roberts (Shelby Eatenton Latcherie).

How do you think the new cast compares to the original? Either way, it’s sure to be another tearjerker.
