It’s been three years since the release of his debut album Vagabond, but the old-soul vocalist Spencer Day returns this March with his anticipated follow-up The Mystery Of You.

Over the three years since his first release, this young star has been on whirlwind journey of personal growth and discovering painful life lessons, which he opens up through songs on his new record.

“I got my heart broken, but they all say it makes you sing better and that is the truth,” said Spencer in an interview with Pat Prescott. “There’s definitely no ill feelings, I will always have a huge amount of love and appreciation and that will always be a source of inspiration.”

His new album deals with the personal experiences from his relationship and uses music as an outlet to grow as a person and help heal the heart-ache. He also hopes his music will help others through similar experiences.

“This is all new songs and it’s actually all the different stages of the relationship I was in from infatuation, head over heels, doubt, suspicion,” he said. “Because I thought it would be way more fun to go through it all in fifty minutes than the real three years it took me.”

Though is new album deals with the complex nature of love and heart-break, much of Spencer’s signature sound is still evident in the songs.

“It still brought a lot of style and character that my last record has,” Spencer said of his new album.

He adds that his soulful sound and homage to the classic standards of the past plays a major part in his music, which he tries to bring to a modern-day audience.

“I want to take my love of this another time and put it in a modern context and create a hybrid of the two, because I love contemporary music as well,” he said.

Spencer relies heavily on story-telling in the lyrics of his new songs, noting that this fading tradition largely goes unpracticed in today’s pop music, but is still very apparent in music havens such as Nashville. Spencer tells us that he spent much of his time in the country music capital to write this new record.

“The one place that still has that has that lyrical tradition is in Nashville,” explained Spencer. “There’s a real storytelling…country music is actually one of the last places that still does that.”

The Mystery Of You will be released on March 12th, but Spencer hints that you’ll be able to hear a few new songs when he takes the stage this Saturday.
