She’s a talented singer and budding actress, but now Macy Gray is branching off in a new role as play director for a fantastic charity event at the Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts this weekend.

Macy called in to talk with Pat Prescott more about stepping into the teaching role to direct this student play titled “Phenomenal: A Celebration of Black History” at the performing arts school her own children attend.

Along with the musical, there will be a special VIP celebrity gala before the show with performances by Macy herself, Bobby Brown and more surprise guests.

However, the entire night is really about the kids with proceeds raised from the event going towards funding programs for the students at the school as well as homeless teens. Macy also tells us that the importance of the arts in schools is why she got involved with this project in the first place.

“I think kids need other studies to excel in so they can feel good about themselves,” said Macy. “It’s just important to have other possibilities because not everybody is born and bred to excel academically or athletically.”

Being her first time directing a musical, Macy tells us it’s a learning experience for both the students in the play as well as herself.

“These kids are amazing and they’re excited and curious, and they have all this raw talent…so it’s really fun to watch and I’ve learned so much from it,” said Macy.

“Phenomenal: A Celebration of Black History” takes place this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. For more information on the gala and tickets to the show, visit
