She’s inspired millions with her open and brave struggles with cancer, and now Good Morning America‘s Robin Roberts will be honored at the 2013 ESPYS as this year’s recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage award, ESPN announced.

The award is presented to individuals who’ve made significant contributions in sports with past recipients including Jim Valvano, Muhammad Ali, and Pat Summitt.

“ESPN will forever be my home and when I got the call, I was speechless. Arthur was a dear friend of mine,” Robin told ESPN’s Sports Center after hearing the news.

Robin first came on the scene as one of the first female sports reporters on ESPN in the ’90s before making her way to a co-host on Good Morning America for the past two decades.

She has an impressive sports background having played four seasons on Southeastern Louisiana University women’s basketball team and has been inducted to the Women’s Institute on Sport and Education’s Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.

Robin has been a source of inspiration for many battling cancer after sharing her brave struggles with breast cancer in 2007. Just last year, Robin faced illness again after contracting a rare blood disorder, MDS, and helped raised awareness for the need of bone marrow donations.

“Robin brings an amazing amount of energy, compassion and determination to everything she does,” said ESPN president John Skipper. “Those qualities made her an incredible asset during her time here at ESPN, and they have served her well as she battled the terrible health challenges that she’s had to face.”

The ESPYS continues to honor its commitment to the The V Foundation for Cancer Research, which launched in 1993. The 2013 ESPY Awards takes place July 17th in Los Angeles and will air on ESPN at 9 p.m.
