The highly anticipated collaborative album Dave Koz and Friends: Summer Horns featuring an all-star sax lineup of Dave Koz, Gerald Albright, Richard Elliot and Mindi Abair drops today (June 11), and it will blow you away!
To coincide with its release, The WAVE was invited out to the Summer Horns rehearsal studio to give our listeners a sneak preview of the new album and tour with the players themselves.
Pat Prescott sat down with Dave, Gerald, Richard and Mindi to get their thoughts on collaborating together for this supergroup project and why they decided to make this tribute record.
“This album has been spinning around in my head for a long time,” said Dave. “It’s all such feel-good music, it’s tailored made for the summer. It’s a celebration of all the bands that gave us all those great horn sections.”
Dave notes that the Summer Horns album includes classic songs from the great bands of the 60s and 70s like Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown and more. Summer Horns not only pays tribute to these memorable horn sections, but does it with their own flair.
“This is pretty amazing to get this kind of fire power. We basically got the most amazing sax players in jazz on one stage,” said Mindi.
Though the end product came out with flying colors, the Summer Horns weren’t sure at first how their four distinctive styles would sound together, but from the first note, they discovered it was an “instant blend.”
“We found out on the first day of recording that it was an instant blend and it just worked really, really well and from that point it just evolved,” said Gerald.
If you love sax, Dave Koz and Friend: Summer Horns album is the perfect soundtrack to the summer and will have you jamming to those classic songs you know and love all over again.
“It’s good friends, good spirit, great music and just this wonderful energy,” said Richard. “What more could you ask for?”
The Summer Horns tour kicks off on June 15th in Las Vegas and makes a stop in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 18th before heading overseas. For complete tour dates and tickets to the show, visit http://davekoz.com.
