Marcus Miller Named UNESCO Artist for Peace

Two-time Grammy winning bassist Marcus Miller has a brand new role of helping promote peace in the world through music.

Miller has been named a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Artist For Peace by the organization’s director Director-General Irina Bokova over the July 4th weekend.

In his role as an Artist For Peace, Miller will work closely with UNESCO’s Slave Route Project and help “promote the lessons learnt [sic] from the tragedy of slavery and the slave trade, and how they can be used to address many of today’s major issues: national reconciliation, respect for cultural pluralism and the need to construct inclusive and just societies,” according to the press release.

Miller first began his work with UNESCO in 2012 after taking part in the first annual International Jazz Day in April lead by Herbie Hancock, who serves as the Goodwill Ambassador for the organization. Miller returned for the second edition of the global peace event held in Istanbul, Turkey earlier this year.
