The beauty of the late summer sun setting among the trees near gorgeous Lake Arrowhead, is commandingly  enhanced by the bright sounds of Jazz in Blue Jay. Nestled atop one of the Blue Jay’s busiest shopping centers, the rhythmic sounds of saxman Michael Paulo and his All Star band jammed thru the night.

In my 13 years at The WAVE, I had surprisingly never ventured the magnificent ascent to the Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear area. I was asked to emcee the most recent concert, and jumped at the chance. What a blast, and what a sensational cause at the same time. The Blue Jay Jazz Foundation is a scholarship initiative that sponsors the appreciation of Jazz Music (and other genres), to L.A. Rotary, and San Bernardino schools.

Since 1991, Blue Jay Jazz has successfully assembled at least 3 concerts each summer, and has featured Poncho Sanchez, Jeff Kashiwa, Greg Adams, Phil Upchurch, The Four Freshman, and the great “West Coast Cool” trumpeter, Jack Sheldon.  Last week, the very energetic Michael Paulo assembled a strong line-up of Jazz All Stars including Dean Cortez, and Kimo Cornwell from Hiroshima, plus Dave Bennett. It was a strong fusion of progressive Jazz, R & B, Blues, and outright Rock n’ Roll with Steely Dan and Steve Winwood material standing out.

This Thursday night you can catch the final concert of the season with Jazz City, a dynamic five piece band, with special guest Gloria Loring, a brilliant singer in her own right, and mother of superstar Robin Thicke. My thanks to Chris Levister,President of Blue Jay Jazz, who is also a Wave listener with a beautiful voice, and used her voice  well in igniting  hundreds of people in the audience to welcome me to the stage by singing the “947 The Wave” jingle. Blue Jay Jazz Foundation secretary and Rim High School Music Director Karen Tomlinson will also appear in this Thursday nights show.

Spend a night in beautiful Blue Jay, with some great music, and an even greater cause.   Get more details here.
