Author, poet, actress and humanitarian Maya Angelou is being recognized for her accomplishments in the literary world by being named the recipient of an honorary book award from the National Book Foundation.

Angelou will be presented with the 2013 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community at the 64th National Book Awards Ceremony and Benefit Dinner, according to the Associated Press via USA Today. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Cipriani in New York.

This will be the first literary prize the iconic 85-year-old author has received during her career, though her work has been awarded by the Grammys and even by the White House with the National Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.

Angelou is best known for her acclaimed 1969 memoir I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, and has since penned six more memoirs, as well as numerous poems, essays and plays.

In celebration of her huge honor, we rounded up five of Angelou’s most memorable quotes below:

  • “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.”
  • “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”
  • “Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness.”
  • “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”
  • “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style”
