Sometimes I think our fascination with vinyl records is more nostalgic than anything else. We talk about it but I dare your friends to prove that they can even play records at home anymore. If they have a turntable, chances are that the needle is shot or else they have one of those all in one throwback record players that are so popular now. Hey, didn’t I have one of those when I was 10?

No matter how you feel about vinyl, there are truly a lot of us who fondly remember Tower Records and all the big music stores that used to be where we went for our music. The record store was a meeting place for music lovers and the clerks were all knowledgeable and helpful because they loved music as much as we did. The Wave’s own Bill Dudley started his career in music as the owner of a record store and this guy is like an encyclopedia of music!

Those record stores have dwindled away since downloads became all the rage and since we can now just point and click and have Amazon send cd’s right to our home without ever having to put on our shoes.

We still love record stores and so once a year we put the spotlight on the ones that are left like Amoeba Records on Sunset. Walk in that place and it’s like walking into our past. It’s nice to see how many 20 somethings are in there too browsing the stacks. Since tomorrow (Saturday April 19th) is National Record Store Day, celebrate by checking out one of these fine record stores in our area:
