Jody Watley, an original member of the group Shalamar, has brought back the brand now known as Shalamar Reloaded. And their first single has been released.
It was back in 2014 that Watley purchased the trademark rights to the group’s name with the hopes of bringing Shalamar’s signature sound with a refreshed and current vibe to the current century.
“I respect my past,” says Grammy-winning singer-songwriter-fashion icon Jody Watley, “but I’m not nostalgic. I hate it when people say, ‘Oh, the good old days…’ Well, the good old days are now, what you make of the now. Some of the music may take people back, however it’s about creating new moments, new memories – with fresh ingredients.”
Watley continued, “Becoming owner allows me to revive the name for a new audience, to not get stuck in the safety net of nostalgia because I’m not interested in doing what I’ve already done.”
Their first officially released single, “SlowDance,” is Shalamar’s first since 1990.
Watley told ESSENCE, ” “I really wanted ‘SlowDance’ to bridge the gap with classic and contemporary R&B before we totally take it to the dance floor.” “It’s a nice change of pace and of course the soul duet is lost musical art form.”
