You have seen the crazy ads on TV. You may also have seen the billboards all over the Southland featuring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.
Crowe is an excellent (primarily dramatic) actor, winning an Oscar for Gladiator. I think he also should have won for A Beautiful Mind. Gosling has been best known for his work in romantic roles (The Notebook, Blue Valentine), and more complex roles in Murder By Numbers and Drive.
The question is, just what is the new movie featuring both of these respected actors The Nice Guys all about?
The ads are purposely not too revealing, but I have seen the movie, and “IT IS A GAS!” One of the funniest films I have seen in years. I saw it two weeks ago and want to see it again. Who would think Gosling and Crowe would be a great comedic team, but they are.
Set in the late 1970’s with a very catchy soundtrack that includes The Temptations, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Al Green among others. It also watches nostalgic with (then trendy), clothes, cars, and even the graphics for the film itself, ripped straight from the Sonny & Cher Show.
All I can say is, Gosling and Crowe are two very “Angry Birds” in The Nice Guys, which is interesting because Angry Birds is their main completion at the box office this weekend.
Gosling is an extremely bad private detective and Crowe is a “heavy” who beats up guys for a living, starting with Gosling. Another big part of the film besides, car races, assassins, frumpy clothes, and fist & gun fights is 13-year-old Angourie Rice, who plays Gosling’s daughter, who has no mother, and is probably the only sane, smart character in the film.
Keith David, and Matt Bomer are very adequate as bad guys, VERY bad guys.
Crowe and Gosling are a great comedic team. These are two very crazy people, who obviously very much enjoyed taking on this odd project. I hope it does well, as I do want to see a follow-up, with more 1970’s-1980’s R&B.
