Sheila E. is known for her high energy stage performances and this Friday night will be no exception when she appears at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Summer Concert Series. She stopped by our studios recently to talk about the show, the loss of Prince and the debut sailing of her Glamorous Life Latin Cruise.

Sheila played at the Hyatt a couple of summers ago and she’s excited about going back. Like the rest of us, she loves the atmosphere there at the amphitheater. She says it’s so intimate that you feel like you’re in your own living room. The last time she was there she brought her bike and went riding along the back bay. She looks forward to performing too because music has been helping her to deal with her grief over the loss of Prince. We could see it in her recent show at Morongo where the other musicians and the fans lifted her up through her tears.

Sheila talked about working with Prince on his Sign of The Times tour and about how she’s keeping her schedule busy as therapy to deal with this difficult time. She told us all about her very first cruise vent, the Glaorous Life Latin Cruise scheduled for February 10th through 13th of 2017.

Overtime segments

A lot of thought and love went into Sheila’s tribute. At first she didn’t want to do it but she decided it would be the right thing to do even though she was seriously grieving. Instead of being sad and sappy she wanted to bring the energy and positivity that Prince is known for. A lot of people she wanted for the tribute including Chaka Khan, were already booked. They only had two days to rehearse but the process was therapeutic for all the musicians. They filmed everything behind the scenes for a documentary on Sheila’s life and career so we’ll all get a chance to see for ourselves.

Sheila hosts her own cruise for the first time in 2017 from February 10th through 13th. The inspiration came from Sheila’s experiences on the Dave Koz cruise. George Lopez, Judith Hill and Pete Escovedo are among the performers. The Latin group Unity will do a tribute to Michael Jackson and there will be an all star tribute to Prince as well. Sheila made a special cruise offer to Wave listeners. You can find out more at

Finally we talked about Sheila’s autobiography, The Beat of My Own Drum, which is even more popular now with the passing of Prince. The story of Sheila’s association with the superstar is part of the story but she also shares her very personal testimony that she hopes will bless others. She says the glamorous life is not all glamour all the time and she is unflinchingly honest about the bad as well as the good. She also talked about the documentary that’s being produced about her life and career. Sheila says she’s sorry she didn’t save more photos and memorabilia from her career, but she feels blessed to have done all she’s done so far and now there is so much more to do. Sheila E. is busy and loving every moment of life. Check her out this Friday at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Summer Concert Series.
