LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — ITT Technical Institute campuses will be shut down permanently after the federal government banned the for-profit school from enrolling new students using federal financial aid funds.

The announcement, made Tuesday morning by ITT Educational Services, Inc., said the corporation will discontinue operations of all its campuses across more than 35 states after approximately 50 years of continuous service – including seven in the metropolitan Los Angeles area.

The move will impact hundreds of thousands of current students and alumni and more than 8,000 employees, according to ITT Educational Services.

“We reached this decision only after having exhausted the exploration of alternatives, including transfer of the schools to a non-profit or public institution,” ITT Education Services said in a statement.
