“Underground Railroad; a Spiritual Journey” at Segerstrom Center For The Arts

Author: Pat Prescott

I have never been as excited by a rehearsal as I was last night at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.

I have the honor and privilege of being one of the narrators for tomorrow night’s concert along with Wren Brown, founder of the award winning Ebony Repertory Theatre and Producer for the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center.

The concert is called “Underground Railroad; a Spiritual Journey” and it’s the brainchild of the legendary Kathleen Battle, who has assembled a program of stirring spirituals inspired by the famed journey to freedom. She has brilliantly woven together a series of readings including letters from Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman and poetic passages that give context to the music and the story behind it.

I was impressed by the University Singers of Cal State Fullerton, who learned all the songs during the past two weeks and when Miss Battle sings, you understand why she’s going back to the Metropolitan Opera in November with this same program after a 22 year absence. It will be a once in a lifetime experience in one of the most beautiful concert halls in all of Southern California. Hopefully you will be able to join us and experience it for yourself.
