This week, OneRepublic release their new album Oh My My, which may be the record to raise the profiles of the hit making band. While they’re often heard on the radio thanks to monster hits like “Apologize” and “Counting Stars,” they aren’t often recognized on the street; not even frontman Ryan Tedder, who has worked as a producer and co-writer with U2, Beyonce and Madonna.
“We’re already a band that’s gotten where we’ve gotten, operating below the radar. We’re maybe sonically ubiquitous; you’ve heard us everywhere, for almost a decade. But visually, we can still walk into a Walgreens and not get mobbed. That’s been amazing.”
And while Tedder has worked on a number of other artists’ albums, OneRepublic hasn’t invited many guests onto their albums (although they’ve collaborated with Timbaland, Sara Bareilles on re-recorded versions of their album tracks). Until now:
“For the first time, we’re going to have quite a few features,” Tedder says. One of those is “A.I.,” which features Peter Gabriel.
“It’s a very modern sounding song,” he said, noting that he’s hoping to bring the legendary singer/songwriter to a younger audience. “I desperately want him on the radio again.”
The album also features collaborations with French music duo Cassius and singer/songwriter/producer Santigold.
Oh My My is in stores October 7. Check out their tour dates at Eventful.
