I do try to avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup.  I simply don’t like the taste and if I want something sweet, I’d rather have something with real sugar in it.  So I guess I’m way ahead of the game because there’s a new study that says High Fructose Corn Syrup eats your memory.   Below is some of the article from the study done by UCLA.  Crazy!

In the study conducted by the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), researchers at the fed two groups of rats a solution containing high-fructose corn syrup — a common ingredient in processed foods — as drinking water for six weeks.  Before the sugar drinks began, the rats were enrolled in a five-day training session in a complicated maze. After six weeks on the sweet solution, the rats were then placed back in the maze to see how they fared.

The June Keyes Penguin Habitat features the playful penguins in their new home, many of which were rescued from Brazil after being stranded from their natural habitat.

Mary J and her castmates from the upcoming Rock of Ages movie gave viewers a hint of what to expect from the upcoming film. Dancing with the Stars alum Julianne Hough (Sherrie Christian) and Diego Boneta (Drew Boley) warmed up the crowd by launching into a medley of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock and Roll” and Foreigner’s “Jukebox Hero,” before Mary came out as her character “Justice Charlier” to sing Journey’s “Anyway Way You Want It.” The track was just released this week to get fans of the Broadway show ready for the movie’s June 15th release date.

Morissette was among the first performers of the night, debuting her brand new song, “Guardian” from her forthcoming album Havoc and Bright Lights. And Carrie Underwood also took the stage to perform “Good Girl” from her just released chart topping album, Blown Away.

The surprising elimination among the dancers last night was Maria Menounos and partner Derek Hough, who had come out among the top with their scores the night before. The remaining three couples competing for the mirror ball next week will be Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd, Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas plus Wiliam Levy and Cheryl Burke.

The finale for Dancing with the Stars will be on May 22.

This week, I’ll be featuring a different dish from the menu of Parker’s Lighthouse in Long Beach!

Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi

Ingredients:

8 ounces mahi mahi
1/2 tsp salt and pepper mix
1 tsp olive oil
1/4 cup macadamia nut crust
1 ea baby 5-6 oz bak choy
.33 cup Pineapple Salsa – Parker’s Lighthouse
3/4 cup Coconut Rice
2 fl ounces Miso Butter Sauce
1 ea Parker’s Lighthouse Bread Service

Directions:

1. Season both sides of the portion Mahi Mahi
2. Brush with olive oil and grill, criss cross mark each side for approximately 2 minutes on each side; fish will be undercooked at this time.
3. Place grilled fish on a sizzle platter topped with 1/4 cup macadamia nut crust spread evenly over the top surface of the grilled fish. Bake for 4 minutes in 350 degree convection oven until the fish is flakey and the crust is golden.
4. Using a ring mold 1 3/4” high and 2 1/2” wide, place coconut rice in ring mold, press gently inside with a clean, sanitized squirt bottle bottom so rice sticks together in the shape of the ring mold. Place 1/3 cup of Pineapple salsa on top of coconut rice in ring mold.
5. Unmold at two o’clock and place on a hot dinner plate.
6. Split bok choy that has been blanched in boiling salted water for 1/5 minutes in half.
7. Cross two halves of bok choy at 11 o’clock with the cut side up and the root ends facing towards 6 and 4 o’clock.
8. Place hot Mahi portion on plate at 5 o’clock slightly propped on the root ends of the bok choy.
9. Ladle 2 oz. of Miso Butter Sauce into the plate well at 5 o’clock between the base of the fish and the edge of the plate well.
10. Serve immediately.

I ran in the The Tinker Bell Half Marathon this past January 29th, and it was well worth all the preparation and time and energy spent. Just seeing one woman at the side of the road holding a sign that said “Lymphoma survivor: Thank you for running!” made it all worthwhile. But there were dozens of these women—and men- with similar signs lining the streets of Anaheim on this chilly January morning.

Young Filipino boy cheerleading squads, hula dancers, high school bands, and military bands played their hearts out early in the morning as we passed by. Thousands of outstretched hands for high-fives as we ran along…all total strangers, but all felt like family. They all cheered us on from the very bottom of their hearts, with unrestrained enthusiasm. “You GOT this!” “Keep Going!” “You’re 25 % through!” “Halfway there!” “Two more turns!” I’ll never forget their faces.

Smiling neighbors living in Anaheim brought flats of water from their homes to give to the runners and gave us their own unique cheers. “Ju kon DO it, ja ja ja!” was my favorite. Pirates inside Disney yelled “Tinker!’ We’d answer “Bell!” Then, “Pixie!” We’d answer “Dust!”

It was a celebration like no other.

The military band and soldiers in fatigues with smiles as big as the moon singing and playing and cheering and giving their all-these are the memories of a lifetime I’ll cherish forever.

So many runners and walkers (men included) were wearing fairy wings on their backs that when we were running as a pack you could actually hear the rustle of wings (and tutu skirts) as we made our way through Disneyland. THAT was special, and unexpected.

And those Disney volunteers knocked us out with their kindness-supplying not only water and guidance, but a genuine encouraging word for everyone who passed….for hours and hours on end. Many had rough voices by the time we ran past, but that didn’t stop them from cheering right down to the soles of their feet.

Best of all, 359 runners participating on behalf of Team In Training raised over a million dollars for blood cancer research! A million dollars that will hopefully provide the next breakthrough in the quest to cure cancer, AND that will be used to improve the quality of life for families living with blood cancers right here in Los Angeles. Now THAT’S worth getting up at 3:15 for!

At about mile 10, a beautiful lady came up beside me and said, “I notice your jersey says you’re running for Team CBS. You wouldn’t happen to work for The WAVE, would you?”

“In fact, I do!” I replied. She turned to me and said, “I lost my mom to Lymphoma several months ago and didn’t know what to do with my grief. Then I heard about Team In Training on The WAVE and decided to give it a try. It’s been so, so helpful in dealing with my loss, and is for sure one of the best decisions I’ve ever made to be here today.” We shared a hug and took a photo, and her story is one that truly touched my heart. Thank you, Annette, for finding me and sharing a bit about your journey.

Hundreds of volunteers manned the water stations with huge grins and pep talks, and hundreds more were charged with the clean up after the race. If you were ever wondering where all the good people in America are, they’re right here in our midst, doing the small but extremely meaningful duties that add up to a whole lot of majesty.

The Red Hat Ladies, a group of dozens of fabulous seniors decked out from head to toe in gaudy red outfits and outrageous scarlet hats were there before the sun came up to set up their lawn chairs. They stole our hearts completely, and it was a tearfest all around as they rallied the sleepy runners and walkers to “Do this! We know you can!”

I just wrote way more than I was going to-but as you can see, it was quite a day.

Thought of you so many times during the race, dear WAVE Family, as one does when you’re pushing yourself. You think of those you love the most and you go a little faster.

The best t-shirts of the day bore the words of Tinker Bell herself:

“Think of the happiest things;

It’s just like having wings.”

Actor Sacha Baron Cohen is used to creating chaos just about everywhere he goes as one of his hilarious characters, and this time was no different during his latest promotional stunt for his new movie The Dictator.

Cohen arrived to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France Wednesday morning dressed in full Dictator Aladeen getup and riding in on a camel, which he nearly fell off. Whether it’s the Lakers, Clippers or Kings, who are you rooting for this season to take the title as champions this season?!

As the Staples Center gears up for a very busy week hosting six playoff games in just four days (meaning a lot of floor changes between teams), fans are getting revved up to cheer on their favorite teams.

L.A. sports fever begins this Thursday as the Kings host game 3 against the Phoenix Coyotes and continues into the weekend with the Lakers and Clippers on Friday and Saturday.

And if both the Lakers and the Clippers have victories in their respective series, it would mean the first-ever Western Conference final between two NBA teams from the same city.

So with all this excitement for our L.A. teams, who are you rooting for to head into the finals?!

While paying a visit to the White House to meet President Obama and First Lady Michelle, LA Galaxy soccer star David Beckham became the butt of an unexpected roast from Obama.

The team was the special guest at the White House on Tuesday as a congratulations for being last season’s Major League Soccer Champions, but Obama snuck in a couple of jokes at Beckham’s expense.

According to the Daily Mail, Obama joked to the audience about Beckham’s modeling career, saying, “He is tough. It is rare a man can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear.”
